AccountAbility Minnesota provides free accounting and tax assistance to small businesses and individuals.
It’s the state’s only community-based nonprofit that provides this type of service. Last year AAM helped 9,700 low-income Minnesotans prepare their taxes—and ensured that they benefited from the earned income tax credit or EITC.
According to some estimates, more than 80 percent of low-income taxpayers nationwide fail to claim the EITC. AccountAbility volunteers also work with other nonprofits to reduce the number of high-fee Refund Anticipation Loans, which have fleeced low-income taxpayers in recent years.
